Beiz 1, 2024
Cotton fabric, Silk organza, Tin medallions, Thread, Block Print
70 x 97cm
“Beiz 1” is a patchwork made up of several beiz (homemade mittens often crafted to carry hot household items) stitched together. The fabrics are sourced from Block 1 in the Blockat district in Kuwait City, providing a snapshot of the current offerings in this area. Arranged in a grid formation, the piece alludes to the permanence of architecture, however the connections and threads are kept loose as a reminder that even though buildings are often thought of as stoic they are in fact ever changing.
This piece is part of the artist’s ongoing research on the modern built environment in Kuwait and the Blockat district specifically, home to the city’s largest textile market. The beiz also serves as a reference to his late grandmother’s craft, emphasizing a connection to personal heritage. This is further expressed through the revealed stuffing of one beiz which is made up of scraps of fabric, the stuffing also includes golden tin medallions purchased from the market acting as a subtle nod to her love for golden bracelets. In this way, “Beiz 1” captures the evolving relationship between textile tradition and the architectural landscape of Kuwait City, reflecting both the changes made by its users and the enduring legacy of familial connections.
